Best Movies Of 2023: 2023 was a great year for the film industry. We got to see some mind-blowing films, and these films did phenomenal business at the box office. There were some big releases on OTTs too. Films like “Jawan” and “Pathaan” were big box office blockbusters, and various films were super-duper hits on OTTs as well.
However, there were many films that did not receive the attention or appreciation they deserved due to the low reach of the star cast. Here, we are going to tell you about the best-underrated films of 2023 from all languages that went unnoticed. We will also add the name of OTT platforms on which they are available on.
12th Fail
This film was released on 27th October and has been directed and written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and produced along with Yogesh Ishwar. The main cast of the film includes Vikrant Massey, Medha Shankar, Anant V Joshi, and Anshumaan Pushkar, with a total runtime of 146 mins and a budget of Rs. 20 Cr.
This movie is based on a book written by Anurag Pathak, which is based on a real-life story of an IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS Shraddha Joshi Sharma. The film shows how the character overcomes poverty to become an IPS officer. The overall narrative of the film has been done really well.

Joram
“Joram” – This film was theatrically released on 8th December with a total runtime of 119 mins in the Hindi language. It is a thriller film written & directed by Devashish Makhija and produced under Zee Studies along with Makhijafilm. In the film, the main role is done by Manoj Bajpayee along with Mohameed Zeeshan Ayyub, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Smita Tambe.
The cinematography of the film has been done by Piyush Puty, and music is given by Mangesh Dhakde. The film shows the story of a desperate man and his infant daughter managing challenges in the system where everything seems to be against his favor.
Kannur Squad
Kannur Squad – This film was released on 2nd September with a total runtime of 161 mins. The original language of the film is Malayalam with a budget of Rs. 32 Cr and made a total box office collection of Rs. 100 Cr. The main star in the film was Mammotty, Rony David Raj, Azees Nedumangad, and others. The film was directed by Roby Varghese Raj and produced by Mammootty.
The music was given by Sushin Shyam, and cinematography was taken care of by Muhammed Rahil. The film is based on a real incident of the police squad made by Kerala Transport Commissioner in Kannur and came to be known as the Kannur Squad. It focuses on 4 policemen who fought against the rising crime rate in Kannur then.

SSE SIDE A
“SSE Side A” – Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side A was released on 1st September with a total runtime of 142 mins and a budget of Rs. 20 Cr. The original language of the film is Kannada, and it has been directed by Hemanth M. Rao and written along with Gundu Shetty. The music is given by Charan Raj under the production of Paramvah Studios.
The film focuses on a love story between Manu and Priya. It shows how Manu did the extra efforts for love but the circumstances took it to unexpected turns. As it is part 1, the stories continue in part 2.

SSE SIDE B
“SSE Side B” – Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side B was released on 17th November with a run time of 148 mins. Both parts A and B have been narrated well by the director Hemanth M. Rao. The main distributor of the film is KVN Productions, and they both did well in the Kannada region where the audience showed a good response towards it.
The film shows the aftermath when Manu is set to get out of the prison after 10 years and in search of Priya, his love. He finally finds out about the unhappy marriage of Priya and then tries to fix the situation of Priya’s family.
OMG 2
This film was released on 11th August 2023 with a total run time of 155 mins and a budget of Rs. 50 Cr, making a revenue of Rs. 221 Cr in the box office. The film was directed and written by Amit Rai and produced by Aruna Bhatia, Vipul D Shah, Rajesh Bahl, and Ashwin Varde, with the main stars being Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam Dhar.
It is a Hindi language comedy-drama film, a sequel to OMG – Oh My God! which was released in 2012. OMG 2 revolves around sex education in India and has received a good response from viewers, making it the 7th highest-grossing Hindi film in 2023.

This film was directed by Jude Anthany Joseph and released on 5th May 2023 with a total runtime of 148 mins and a budget of Rs. 26 Cr, earning a total of Rs. 177 Cr. The cast includes Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, and Lal. The songs have been done by Nobin Paul and William Francis. The film tells the story of a former military officer who experiences trauma witnessing soldiers’ death. He stays in a small town, and his name is Anoop. It also shows Anoop’s affection towards Manju and the challenges faced by him in traveling to Dubai and seeking a visa for it.

Directed by Vigneh Raja, this movie was released on 9th June 2023 with a run time of 147 mins. The original language of the film is Tamil, and it earned a total revenue of Rs. 50 Cr in the Box Office. The movie is written by Alfred Prakash along with Vignesh Raja, and the cast includes R. Sarathkumar, Ashok Selvan, and Nikhila Vimal. The cinematography has been taken care of by Kalaiselvan Sivaji and edited by Sreejith Sarang.
The movie focuses on the story of a DSP trainee who got newly appointed and how his further work went on cases against crime. This film is also the directorial debut of Vignesh Raja. It is a crime thriller film that received good support from the audience.

Shetty, and the main lead is done by Raj B. Shetty along with Raj Deepak Shetty, Chaitra Achar, and Samyukta Hornad. This movie has been produced under the banner of Lighter Buddha Films, Coffee Gang Studios, Agastya Films, and Smooth Sailers.
The story of the film is based on the Uttara Kannada district, Kumta region in Coastal Karnataka. The movie has also been released in the Malayalam language. The film shows the story of Sampath, who is a newly appointed SI at Tamas Katte Police Station.

The movie name translates itself to the word Secret, which was released on 5th October 2023 with a total runtime of 157 mins in the Hindi language. It is a spy thriller-based film based on the novel ‘Escape to Nowhere’ written by Amar Bhushan’s. The cast includes Tabu, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi, and it is streaming on the OTT platform Netflix.
The movie has been directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and written along with Rohan Narula. The movie focuses on an ISI agent Heena Rehman and RAW agent Krishna Mehra during the post-Kargil war period. It shows how the death of Heena was compromised for political benefits, and the storytelling of the film has been done really well.
Valvi
It’s an Indian Marathi movie whose name translates to “Termites,” which was released on 13th January 2023 on the big screen and got onto the OTT platform i.e., ZEE5 on 24th February 2023. This film has been directed by Paresh Mokashi, who has shown a dark comedy thriller in the movie. He has written the movie along with Madhugandha Kulkarni, and the main cast includes Swapnil Joshi, Anita Date Kelkar, Subodh Bhave, and Shivani Surve.
The film has shown how a couple married for the past 14 years is still childless as well as how a mental disorder affects their life with an ongoing experiment on termites.
Kadak Singh
Directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and released on 8th December 2023 on ZEE5, this movie has a great cast like Pankaj Tripathi, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Sanjana Sanghi, Jaya Ahsan, and Dilip Shankar. In the film, AK Srivastava, who is an officer of the Financial Crime Department, gets diagnosed with amnesia. Even though he manages to solve the case of a Chit Fund Fraud of Hospital.
It is a decent Hindi language thriller movie produced by WIZ Films along with KVN Production. The overall narration and storytelling done here are really well, making this film worth watching as it might bring you on the edge of your seats.
Maaveeran
This Tamil language film was directed by Madonne Ashwin and was released on 14 July 2023 with a budget of Rs.35 Cr and made a total box office collection of Rs. 89 Cr. The main cast of the film includes Sivakarthikeyan and Aditi Shankar, who have done great performances in the film. They try to show the story of a comic book artist, Sathya, who writes illustrations about a brave character named ‘Maaveeran,’ which translates to ‘The Great Warrior’ for a Tamil newspaper.
The movie has shown how the artist being a coward is being controlled by the character and then takes fight with a corrupt politician. The IMDb rating of the film is 7.4 out of 10, which seems to be a decent number to have a watch.
Sirf Ek Banda Kaafi Hai
This film has been directed by Apoorv Singh Karki and written along with Advocate P.C. Solanki and Deepak Kingrani. The lead role of the film has been done by Manoj Bajpayee, and it was released on 2nd June 2023 on limited theatrical and but actually on 23rd May 2023 on ZEE5 platform.
This movie is a courtroom drama based on real-life events of a 5-year-long-standing case where Adv. P.C. Solanki was a standalone lawyer, and the movie has tried to show the challenges and hurdles faced by him in bringing justice to a minor. The total runtime of the film is 2hr 7 mins with an IMDb rating of 7.9 out of 10.
