The Banshees Of Inisherin Ending, Explained: In Jane Austen’s “Persuasion”, there’s a quote about the company that says “My idea of good company, Mr. Eliot, is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company.” Good company affects ideas and creative thinking and productive chatting go a long way.

Focussed on this theme of “Friendship” comes along “The Banshees Of Inisherin” starring Brendon Gleeson and Colin Farrell. Directed by Martin McDonagh, the film explores the sudden end to their lifelong friendship by Colm who leaves Padraic devastated and when Padraic sets out to repair the friendship, there come some consequences that neither of them expected.

Summary

Padraic along with his sister Siobhan lives together on a remote island off the coast of Ireland where his daily routine is taking the milk from his little farm to the shop and then at sharp 2 o’clock going to his lifelong friend Colm’s house and inviting him to the pub. They have been friends for so long that if someone sees Padraic alone, they start asking about whether the two have been in a fight or not.

Padraic is a nice and talkative fella who adores his friendship with Colm whereas Colm on the other hand, doesn’t talk much and practices on his music. The sudden stop that Colm puts to their friendship doesn’t sit well with Padraic and he keeps on trying so Colm and him would be back being buddies.

Why Does Colm Stop Being Friends With Padraic?

Colm does not talk a lot and he has crossed his middle age and he feels that he has nothing to show for his life. He spends his life chatting away with Padraic which doesn’t give him anything fruitful or any advantage, in short, their chats do not help him in any way. He stops liking Padraic and makes it very clear that he does not have time for this meaningless chatting that doesn’t give him anything and only wants to focus on his creating music so that he’ll have something to show for himself when he dies.

He thinks that while the human presence is only limited, music can live on for centuries like Mozart and Beethoven which is why he just wants to focus on his music. Padraic is a very talkative person and his talks seem dull to Colm as well but Colm thinks that he is interesting and likeable when Padraic is drunk.

Unable to understand the whole picture of Colm’s decision, he keeps on trying to get back with Colm which has been getting on Colm’s nerves to the point that he gives him a warning that if Padraic does not stop talking to him, every time he does so, Colm will cut off one of his fingers and give it to him until there’s no fingers left and he does that too.

One day after Padraic is drunk and confronts Colm, the next morning he finds Colm and apologizes for his behaviour and later finds one of Colm’s fingers at his doorstep. With his continuous efforts, Padraic does not become successful in his efforts.

Padraic who was until now trying to win back Colm now wants Colm dead and he makes that clear in the pub where Colm is present along with other people that his finger killed his donkey and on Sunday at 2 o’clock he will come to Colm’s house and set fire to it. He’s not going to check who’s inside but he does ask that Colm leave his dog outside because he doesn’t want his pet dog to get hurt.

He does the same and puts fire to Colm’s house and comes back to see him sitting inside but the next morning he sees Colm standing on the beach and goes to talk to him. Colm says that they’re both levelled but Padraic denies that if Colm had burned along with his house that would’ve make them quits so. Both of them talk about the ongoing war in the mainland and thinking it the war has ended but Padraic says that they’ll be at it again and for some things, there’s no moving on from and that’s a good thing according to him.

This means that Padraic still wants Colm dead and he and Colm are not friends now and he will come back trying to kill Colm. He is not moving on from this, is all.
