The first episode starts with the 1989 New Year Slam Competition, where a ssireum match was about to start. Kim Baek Du is the lead character of the show, and he was practicing for the match.
The trainer saw a guy at the practice ground; he thought it would be good for his interview. One guy was working at the parking point where people pay money and park their vehicles because he wanted to pay his reunion fees. He looked very confident for his upcoming game. He was going back home, and he drank too much. Because of that, he fell on the road and was dreaming about his childhood. But he got back home, and someone helped him at night.
On the same day in the morning, an accident happened where a man named Choi Chil Seong died; he fell into the water while drinking in the car. The next day, Kim Baek Du was going for training. At that moment, he came to know that he was saved by the police last night; the police helped him to go home.
Everyone got their numbers to determine who would go into the ring first and fight odds. Baek Du was practicing hard for this match. On the other side, the police were investigating the case of Choi Chil Seong, trying to find out how he died. Someone said that while driving, he was talking to someone on the phone.
Everyone got back home, but only Baek Du was sitting back to the ring and thinking about the match. On the next day, one girl arrives in town by bus, and everyone was looking at her. The invitation for the match was sent everywhere; Kim was talking to his coach. The coach said, “You can be the next champion,” and Kim also believes in himself.

Kim Tae Baek was known as the Emperor of Ssireum, and because of that name, Kim Baek Du is working so hard for his upcoming match. The police were out for patrolling at night, and that girl was smoking alone near the lakeside in the middle of the night. Champion Kim Tae Baek also arrives at the match, and a large number of audiences arrived to see the match. Finally, Kim Baek Du’s number came, and he was going for his match.
He was from the Blue Satba, and the fight started with Blue vs. Red. Kim was fighting against Lim Dong Seok, and Kim’s coach was explaining to him to hold that Satba tightly to win this match.
Round 2 starts after that, Kim tried hard, and he succeeded in the next round. In the third round, both wrestlers fell on the floor at the same time. Because of that, the referee demanded a video review of the round. After the video review, judges said Red Satba won.
Kim was looking very sad after the match, Baek Du gets back home. One girl also arrives at his place and throws him. Baek Du was remembering something, and Oh Du Sik was the same girl he was thinking about. She arrives at his place, and the episode 1 ends.
