Matto Ki Saikil Review: Films that are grounded and portrayal of the very society you live in is something that is easily seen in Prakash Jha’s films and his new venture in the recently released film “Matto Ki Saikil” also known as “Matto’s Cycle” brings back that same vibe.
The story is about a daily wage laborer whose journey from his village to the city for work is made easy by the cycle that he has held for 20 long years whom he so dearly calls his “Saas (Mother-In-Law)”. The film is a story of Matto and the cycle that he so needs for his daily travel.
For Matto, having a cycle that he can ride to work and come back is one of those luxuries that he can hardly afford. With his old cycle of 20 years slowly getting bent out of shape that it is beyond repair but Matto keeps at it because he cannot afford a new one. One day, his cycle is run over by a tractor and that is the end of his cycle.
Matto tries walking to work but that just leaves him more tired than ever and he realizes his true need for a cycle. The film is about how what we consider as something obsolete at times in our house because we’re privileged can be something of utmost importance like their family’s well-being depend on it.

About “Matto Ki Saikil”
Down To Earth
The Film is extremely down to Earth and it does not fool the viewer by showing a condition that we cannot expect and that is the beauty of it. It shows you what is real and does not give you a false narrative and play with your emotions. What we see is a truth for many, unfortunately.
Not Long
The film is 96 minutes long and for a pretty short film considering the norm these days, its quite engaging and on point. We can see various emotions of love, family responsibilities, even young love, and politics (For a Prakash Jha film, this is a must) all in that short runtime which makes up for a great screenplay.
No Songs
The film does not contain any songs in between that would distract your mind to another scene, everything flows nicely and when it ends, you realize that there was no song in the whole film.
However, there is a bit of song in there you can find Matto singing with his laborer buddies when he’s coming back from work but other than that, nothing else that is good, personally.

Weak Points
You Might Need Subtitles
For a film that is down to Earth, it tells the story about a village Bharatiya in Jharkhand, India but the language used in the entire film is a bit hard to understand because it’s not all Hindi, and for that, you might need subtitles to understand it fully.
However, at the same time, this is also a good point about the film but if we’re considering the audience’s understandability of the film, it’s not a good thing.
Final Rating: 3.5/5
Matto Ki Saikil is a story that we are quite too familiar but each time, it feels like an old wound opening up. It is also a satire on the world we live in and of the people we live with. If you do not mind down-to-earth films with great content, this is one worth it film.
