Hoax (2023) Movie Ending Explained: The story of Sherri Papini, who was abducted while out for a jog, is told in Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini. She was released after being held captive for three weeks and claimed that two Mexican women abducted and tortured her.
Sherri Papini returns home on the evening of Thanksgiving and tells the police that she was abducted by two Mexican ladies. The police then start searching for the two Mexican women. After a week, the DNA results for Sherri Papini’s clothing arrive, and the police discover that there was only male DNA present. They then begin to doubt Sherri herself, whether she is telling the truth or lying.
After some time, they learned about Chris’s cousin, who later claimed that Sherri was at Chris’s house when she was abducted. The police were also made aware of a complaint made by Sherri’s mother a number of years ago, in which she claimed that her daughter had injured herself and had told everyone that her mother was the one who did it.
After learning about Chris, the main lead police officer approaches Chris and asks him about him and Sherri, and he tells him that everything was planned by Sherri herself, and they have been friends since high school, and he loved her very much, so when Sherri tells him that her husband Keith used to beat her, he becomes emotional and helps her in love. But even he had no idea she would return to her family.

Following Chris’s confession, police arrested Sherri Papini on March 3, 2022, for misleading the police and wasting the time and money of everyone who helped her by believing she was the victim. Her family, however, are the true victims. Keith obtains a divorce from her and takes the children with him.
She is sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $300,000 in September 2022.
