Mulan Hit or Flop: One of the most awaited movies of the year was the live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated movie from Disney’s Mulan was slated for a big release in 2020 but unfortunately couldn’t get it. Despite having released in VoD in the United States, the movie was supposed to be a big hit where the theatres were open. Especially the market for Disney films in the past has been China.
And infact the movie itself tells the story of the infamous Chinese legend so the makers were confident that it will do great business in China. But sadly that’s not the case for Mulan who unfortunately isn’t attracting an audience to the theaters.
Sadly the collection in China has been underwhelming for Disney as the movie has only collected $23 million from China. Infact Christopher Nolan’s Tenet had earned around $30 million. This comes as a big shock because the content was made just to keep the Chinese audience in mind and with actors such as Donnie Yen, Jet Li being in the film this is a huge surprise for the trade.
If we have to point so as to why the film didn’t work? The most probable reason will be that since it is a Chinese Folklore, Chinese cinema already has abundant films for this legend and thus they would prefer the original and local content as compared to foreign ones. No doubt on that, that Covid-19 has played a major part in this and has stopped the moviegoers to venture into the theatres.
The makers were hoping that the numbers would be in the range of 30-40 million dollars but it has not been the case for Mulan. Now Disney will be hoping to get more from Chinese market as they are optimistic with whatever the film has collected in this unprecedented times
