Guide (1965) Movie Review: Guide starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman directed by Vijay Anand. This movie is almost 60 years old today when I first saw it and this made me fall in love with Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, and S. D. Burman.

Dev Anand because of how big of a superstar he was and the way he spoke 5 languages at the start of the movie and nearly played 4 different roles. The most supersizing part for me was that Waheeda Rehman stood out even when she was sharing a frame with Dev Anand.

These days we don’t see actresses like her in Bollywood who dance and act at the same time. The way she complimented S. D. Burman’s music with her dance and Vijay Anand’s vision with acting is just great to look at. For me the thing I will remember the most about Guide is Waheeda Rehman’s all-around performance.

The Guide is also a musical with romantic drama and the way S.D. Burman composed every song which still holds power over anything in the movie.  My favourite from the Guide is Tere Mere Sapne by Mohammed Rafi. This is the song where the movie feels like a romantic movie the song Gaata Rahe Mera Dil is also a romantic song filled with the romance between Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman and This is one of the most beautifully filmed songs ever, those mountains are just beautiful to look at.

Apart from songs and acting there is something else that makes Guide the cult classic and that is the cinematography. The cinematography of Guide is something that people ignored and didn’t appreciate as much as it deserves. Cinematographer Fali Mistry did an outstanding job and made the film look this good. There are some frames in the film that I just wondered how they shot at that time with limited resources. Also, the use of lighting compliments the cinematography.

Guide also tells us that the soul remains forever. What you do as a living person decides how people will remember you, and how history will remember you after your death. Personal thoughts will always be here on earth so be kind and help others and even if you do something wrong don’t live with guilt just apologize and take your part in suffering just like Raju.

He did his time in jail and when he got out he spent his whole life helping others who needed someone to guide them that is why I wonder why Vijay Anand must have chosen the name Guide for his movie.

All those things that happened, in the end, are so a well-written part but that part can be a little bit long for some people. In the end, I will say that Guide was such an experience that I see myself re-visiting from time to time for those beautifully filmed songs and the most iconic couple Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman.
