The film follows Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) & Peter (Ashton Kutcher) who’ve been best friends for over 20 Years. Debbie and Peter were dating before Peter left LA Because he feared earthquakes and settled in New York and became successful.
Debbie married Jim, but later they divorced. She is now a single mother and taking care of his 13-year-old boy.
Debbie called Peter on his birthday and wished him. Later Debbie talked about how she is coming to New York because of an exam for a week and Peter was very happy about it. Peter’s life isn’t that good in New York. He lives a lavish life, but he is always lonely. Peter wanted to be a writer, but he didn’t follow his dream.
Debbie’s life isn’t that good in LA, she is a single mother and her son has a lot of health problems, that’s why she wants to get an accounting job, so she can pay for the treatment of her son. Debbie is going to New York for a week and her friend Alicia is very happy about it. Debbie also loves books, she loves reading books.

Debbie is going to leave her son with Scarlet, but Scarlet got some work last time. Debbie messages Peter that she’s not coming, and Peter replies that he will handle her son. Debbie didn’t want the help, so Peter convinced her and they agreed to it.
Peter then comes to LA and Debbie goes to New York
Peter picks up Debbie’s son Jack and Peter finds out Jack doesn’t have any friends, so he asks him why he didn’t have any friends. Jack explains that Evan and Wade were his friends, but they joined another ice hockey team after that they stopped talking and he can’t join that team, because of his mom. Peter makes plans of how he can help Jack get his friends. Peter made a plan of showing off his money, but that plan became a super flop.
Debbie found it very difficult in Peter’s room because his room is a smart home and Debbie didn’t know how to turn on the AC or Heat, but then Peter’s friend Minka came and she became very friendly with Debbie and she even asked her out for a drink. Debbie has very important work in the morning, so she says No. Debbie finishes her work and gets the message from Minka and the two go for a drink. Debbie found Theo in that club, Theo is a book publisher and writer he owns a press.
