Shamshera Movie Review: India has been giving off such blockbusters this year and those too, earning 10 times more than they were made with and they’re worth it too. Upon analysis, you’ll realize that those movies are from the South Indian Industry and not from the Industry India is known for in the whole world, BOLLYWOOD.

Bollywood has not been able to give a worthy blockbuster that would win the hearts of Indians, in general, and this week, we have a contender that wants to change just that and that is Shamshera!

Helmed by Aditya Chopra of the YRF Productions, this action drama promises a lot from its trailer and it also brings a fan favorite actor Ranbir Kapoor back to the silver screen. With an amazing cast of Sanjay Dutt playing the antagonist, Vaani Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, and many more, the promises were made but were it too much of an expectation from the fans’ side, or is the movie just another attempt to redeem Bollywood’s lost soul that we have been seeing from our childhood and our parents in their childhood.

Shamshera has a runtime of 158 Minutes which might sound long but it doesn’t bore you throughout the film. It starts off with the story of how the Khamerans, the cast in India before the East India Company came was uprooted from their native land and wandering for a place to stay but allowed nowhere and that gives rise to Shamshera who after enduring so many fights back creating a nuisance for the Britishers by looting the local businessmen.

Shamshera, the leader of the Khamerans dies trying to escape the fort for the freedom of their people and is then stoned to death by his own people. Shamshera’s wife gives birth to a son named Balli who has to endure his father’s legacy of being a deserter by the very people for whom he fought.

The film follows with the gang getting back together and also showing more of Vaani Kapoor who is the love interest of Balli who performs at functions, helping Balli and his gang to loot more businessmen by crashing their functions. This goes on for some time until Shudh Singh comes to hear about this and investigates. Its followed by a clash between Shudh Singh and Balli which ends up in Balli’s triumph and the rise of Shamshera, again.

The film also introduces a lieutenant from East India Company who comes to investigate these loots who supersedes Shudh Singh in rank which also ends up in a clash between Shamshera and him ending up in Shamshera’s win but that also makes the officer aware of what the history has been for Khamerans and how they were created with.

The film has been made with love and we can see that because Karan Malhotra, the director who has a few but good movies, with YRF producing it and Ranbir also. Ranbir Kapoor has worked really hard for this movie and we appreciate that because the role demands so much. Ranbir has definitely not let us down and not YRF as well.

The film has a couple of weak points as well, it’s not so strong all the time. There are things that could have been avoided like a romantic song right at the beginning of the second half that just gives you Vaani and Ranbir romancing. It feels pushed at sometimes, during the song and in a couple of scenes. Other than that, it does not let you drift away.

The screenplay for Shamshera is kind of dodgy because it works at some point but does not. It does not follow through. The film has a few plot holes but those can be ignored because the film actually triumphs in keeping you engaged throughout the runtime. The Direction is on point as the fight sequences are brilliant and specially shot in IMAX, it looks beautiful. All the actors have done their roles beautifully, Ranbir especially because he brought the charms and the muscle along and that shows the hard work he put in the film.

The soundtrack of the movie is pretty bang on. The music has been given by Mithoon and he has done a good job. The songs are quite catchy too and they stay on your mind for quite some time. There are not a lot of songs so you do not feel like you’re watching a musical which is good.

Considering everything, I am going with 3.5 out of 5 stars for the film, Shamshera is a very brave attempt to redeem Bollywood’s image and honestly, it does at some point. The movie is not perfect but it works, however, its not on par with the South Indian Blockbusters like KGF or RRR but it has its own charm and we need to agree on that. Shamshera is definitely a worth-watching movie because this is the best Bollywood offering right now and it’s actually more than just watchable.

Rating: 3.5/5

"I'm just a humble cinephile with a knack for stringing words together. My reviews may not be as fancy as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" but they'll give you a good idea of whether a movie is worth the ticket price. I may not be a "Casablanca" of criticism, but I'll always give you my honest opinion. So join me on this journey of cinematic discovery, it's sure to be "One for the Ages."
