Goodbye Movie Review: Vikas Bahl has been consistent in his ventures with giving some amazing work in his career and now he is back with yet another topic that is not talked about a lot that is sort of like a taboo and with the hopes that this film would open a new side of how we make sense of things and we’ll start to talk about the inevitable, Death.
The film “Goodbye” directed by Vikas Bahl is about a family that was held together by the mother Gayatri played by Neena Gupta who dies suddenly of a heart attack leaving everyone in its wake, her husband played by Amitabh Bachchan, and the kids most were adopted.
The film revolves around one only one thing, death but also how you make sense of what death is, and how different people have different views on how a person should be laid to rest when they’re dead.
In a typical society where the norms have been laid out since ancient times so much so that they seem obsolete now, it does feel like an argument between the older generation who follows those customs and the new generation that feels that these customs are just blind faith.
Good Points
The Cast
The cast does a fabulous job of giving us a mixed feeling of comedy in the time of grief when there’s a death of a family member. Neena Gupta & Amitabh Bachchan are amazing together and their chemistry works.
Not to forget, the Bollywood debutant Rashmika Mandanna, she’s done justice to her role as someone who questions everything around her, especially the customs that don’t make sense to her.
Music
The Music is especially good in the film, with the Jaykaal-Mahakaal song voiced by Amit Trivedi himself, it works so well with the film and the scenes it has been put into. You will not be let down by the film’s music.
Philosophical Take
The film is also a philosophical take on the whole idea of death as something meaningful and just a part of a life cycle. The cameo from Sunil Grover works brilliantly and for someone who is a thinker, that is pure gold.

Weak Points
Runtime
The film is quite long with a runtime of 2 Hours and 25 Minutes which does feel a bit stretched when you’re watching it. A couple of scenes that felt like a satire on the current society could have been cut because it does give the film a mixed bag of genres.
Not for everyone
The film is not for everyone. For people who are philosophical about the idea of death and like Mythology, it’s a good one for those people but people who are expecting the film to be spectacularly entertaining, do not bother watching it.
