Cobra Tamil Movie Review: The Highly anticipated Vikram starrer “Cobra” that ended his long break as a lead in movies has been released in the theatres now and a flood of reviews has started to come in for it.

Not only that, the film is going house-full on its first day because of the long wait the fans had to do just to see their favorite actor see on the big screen. The film took 3 long years to complete as COVID delayed the film’s production. However, here is COBRA’s review

Surprisingly long with a runtime of just a little over 3 hours, the film starts off with the murder of the Chief Minister, and then we’re met by Roshan Matthew’s character Rishi who is playing the negative role and is also a famous entrepreneur in the film.

The first half of the film then continues with the introduction of Vikram’s character and his love interest Srinidhi with their romantic songs in between that the film would be okay without. For a film that was raved about for its thriller element, we’re not met with the real thrill until the end of the first half which ends with a twist.

The second half of the film is surprisingly long and it fails to engage you, but some scenes grapple you and pull you back like the interrogation scene where Vikram’s character is getting interrogated. The film tries to show grandeur in all the ways possible, cinematography, screenplay, and the getups that Vikram has played, they’re just the extension of what Vikram has poured into the movie.

The cast is big for COBRA and apart from Vikram and Roshan Matthew, the cast barely stands tall. The film is standing on Vikram’s shoulders with the amount of work he’s done, from his acting to the variations that he’s brought in the get-ups he’s doing, his work shows but then it shadows all the other actors. Roshan has done his negative role beautifully. Other than that, the debutant actor Irrfan Pathan has tried to do justice but after some time it felt like he was just “there” and wasn’t making much impact.

With a movie of surprisingly long runtime, it surely is a whole lot pretty. The foreign sequences are amazing and Cobra’s targets are international so we have gotten to see foreign scenes as well. The cinematography holds good for the film but how much longer can you just see the great visuals right? It needs to have a plot that grabs you and acting that doesn’t let you stray away; COBRA fails in that part.

COBRA’s screenplay feels dodgy after some time because it doesn’t keep you engaged or interested. Sometimes it’s too complex for normal audiences to understand and sometimes it’s useless love sequences or a couple of songs that felt like they had been pushed in between. The screenplay needed to be better for the film and with a shorter runtime, it would’ve been an effective thriller.

R. Ajay Gnanamuthu who has previously directed Imaikkaa Nodigal which was a blockbuster has definitely brought something new, a killer that uses Numbers or his Mathematical Skills to kill his victims.

Ajay has incorporated some really good sequences mainly the interrogation scene for which most credit goes to Vikram but Ajay brought this to the screen. Ajay has tried to do justice to the script but it could have been shorter if the film had some cuts like the love sequences weren’t really necessary for a film whose main element is Thrill, it doesn’t need that. It is a good effort from the director.

Surprisingly long with some great concepts that wear off after some time. Must Watch for Vikram Fans, for others, just one time is enough.

Rating: 2.8/5

"I'm just a humble cinephile with a knack for stringing words together. My reviews may not be as fancy as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" but they'll give you a good idea of whether a movie is worth the ticket price. I may not be a "Casablanca" of criticism, but I'll always give you my honest opinion. So join me on this journey of cinematic discovery, it's sure to be "One for the Ages."
